Holst Victorian House is delighted to welcome Nethra Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) to perform a programme of Indian dance for us.  There couldn’t be a more appropriate way of celebrating Gustav Holst’s life-long interest in Indian culture which had a significant influence on his music and his outlook, stimulated initially by the Anglo-Indian presence in Cheltenham, later developing into a close study of Indian texts.  He even taught himself Sanskrit, and was inspired to write the Hymns of the Rig Veda and the opera Savitri, which was based on part of an ancient Sanskrit epic, among other compositions reflecting Indian musical influence.

NAPA was founded in 2018 as a cultural organisation to promote Indian classical performing arts, its ethos being to raise the profile of these and help individuals connect with Indian culture and its rich traditions in dance and music. Classes are held online and face-to-face for students following a structured syllabus.  More information about NAPA can be found on their website at https://nethraacademy.co.uk/

The evening will consist of a display of dancing by students of the Academy, with a themed focus on Lord Krishna, and our Curator, Laura Kinnear will introduce the performance with a short talk about Holst’s Indian interests and influences.   Refreshments will also be available.

We look forward to welcoming you to this very special event – a real first for the Holst Victorian House!
