John is a well-known and sought-after freelance pianist and organist working in the Cheltenham area. He moved to Cheltenham in 1982 to take up the post of Assistant Director of Music and organist at Cheltenham College, and in 1984 became the conductor of Charlton Kings Choral Society, a post he retains to this day. He also taught at Cheltenham Ladies’ College, and his work with the choir there included reaching the semi-finals of Sainsbury’s Choir of the Year Competition. He has held organist’s posts at Cirencester Parish Church and All Saints’ Church, Cheltenham, and was Director of Music at St Peter’s Church, Leckhampton.
John has accompanied the tenor James Gilchrist in first performances of Holst songs, and recently in a post-lockdown concert of Christmas music. He has edited a number of previously unpublished works by Holst, and this has led to John recording his four organ pieces at Hereford Cathedral, to the world premiere performance of the choral work ‘Clear and Cool’, and to the ongoing publication of the complete songs by Goodmusic Publishing. John has also composed a number of choral works, some of which are published by Animus Music, and is closely involved with both the Arthur Bliss Society and the Holst Birthplace Museum in Cheltenham.
We are very grateful to John for donating his time and skill to support the Holst Museum. In this recording, he plays a selection of English music from the 1920s, including Howells, Vaughan Williams and, of course, Holst.
Many thanks to everyone involved: John Wright, Liz & Andrew Auster, Marina Moore, Cheltenham Music Festival Society, Millie Mussett (video editor), Bob Burnell (sound), Roger Harding (camera) and Emma Hartshorn (clapper board and catering).
