Friends of the Holst Birthplace Trust are warmly invited to the 2025 Annual General Meeting of the Holst Birthplace Trust on Wednesday 16 July. The meeting will be held at 2.15 for 2.30 pm in the Council Chamber at the Cheltenham Municipal Offices.
Following the official business there will be a special presentation on the early days of the Museum.
In 1973 David Addison took up the role of Curator (later Director) of the Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, now the Wilson. Finding a large amount of material relating to Gustav Holst, he contacted Imogen, Gustav’s daughter, who enthusiastically supported David in addressing the planning and financial issues and, fortuitously, the purchase of 4 Clarence Road and in setting up the Museum. Mary Comino (now Greensted) was appointed Deputy Director of Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum in November 1974, and her first project was to adapt the ground and first floor into the Holst Museum, with Steve Blake and Alex Kelly later working on the basement which opened a couple of years later.
We are delighted that David, Mary, Steve and of course Laura will be outlining the early days of the Museum and the challenges they overcame, with a backdrop of photos from the opening and first few years of the Museum.
Refreshments will be served after the talk.Â
